Dakshina Palli an educational and cultural not for profit in NYC presents RAJA an intimate program of Bharata Natyam performed by Jaan R. Freeman. Mr. Freeman performs in the rare family style of the late great dancer T. Balasaraswati. Mr. Freeman a disciple of Smt. Nandini Ramani & Smt. Priyamvada Sankar, both senior torch bearers of this style. Mr. Freeman first learned in this tradition back in 1995 under Smt. Kamala Cesar. Freeman has dedicated himself to this practice for 22 years, performing teaching and continues to study. Freeman is one of two male dancers performing in this lineage still date.
The program will feature items of the Bharata Natyam repertoire. The featured item is an excerpt from a Varnam which exalts King Bhasakara Sethupathy of the city of Ramanathapuram who ruled from (1889-1903).
Mr. Freeman is the Artistic Director of Dakshina Palli and has been touring the United States with his solo program called Bharata Natyam ~for New Audiences which is in its 9th season.
RAJA will be presented in an informal intimate venue on April 29th, 2017 from 6:00pm-7:30pm at Studios 353 in NYC. Seating is limited and RSVP is highly recommended.
