Simran S. Sethi, most recently Netflix’s director of International Originals, India and the Middle East, has joined ABC Entertainment as executive vice president, Development and Content Strategy.
In her new role, the Los Angeles-based Sethi will oversee comedy, drama and longform series development for the broadcast network.
The appointment not only reunites Sethi with ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke, her former boss at Disney’s Freeform, it also marks her return to broadcast five years after she left NBC.
Prior to joining Netflix, Sethi spent two years at Freeform, where she worked with Burke on projects like “The Bold Type,” “Siren,” “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger,” among others.
She has also worked in development at NBC, Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison and Sony Pictures Television. “I am both thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to once again work with Karey Burke and her trailblazing development team during such an exciting and transformative time at ABC,” Sethi said.
“The network is a force in the industry that understands the importance of legacy, creating content that delivers the broadest audience possible and supports projects from start to finish — I can’t wait to be a part of a company whose leadership is truly looking to the future.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sethi exited Netflix in May following a nearly two-year run as the streamer’s creative director for international originals. “She opted to depart the job rather than move to India,” THR said, citing sources.
“At the streaming giant, Sethi was instrumental in getting the streamer’s Indian originals on their feet, growing the roster from one show to 20,” THR said.
“Simran is a creative force with deep relationships across the industry and a proven track record of finding and championing impactful series that resonate with viewers,” said Burke. “I’m so happy to welcome her back to the Disney team."
