Ahead of India visit Trump hails Bollywood film about gay romance

President Trump said Feb. 21 it was "great” that a new romantic comedy produced in India features gay characters less than a year and a half after homosexuality was decriminalized in that country.

According to Washington Examiner, Trump retweeted the announcement from Peter Tatchell, a gay rights activist, who wrote, “A new #Bollywood rom-com featuring a gay romance is hoping to win over older people, following the decriminalization of homosexuality. Hurrah!”

In an endorsement which seemingly came out of the blue, Trump appeared to show his approval of “Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan,” starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar  which tells the story of a gay couple’s attempts to win over the approval of their elders. The film, directed by Hitesh Kewalya opened to a good response on Feb. 21.

After Trump’s apparent endorsement came, the Independent of UK wrote, in response to an article on British LGBT+ website Pink News that had been shared by the prominent British rights campaigner Peter Tatchell.

The Trump administration has been working to decriminalize homosexuality around the globe. U.S. Ambassador to Germany and incoming acting director of Intelligence Richard Grenell, who is gay, led the effort, urging countries to stop arresting and torturing gay individuals.

In India, which Trump is visiting on Feb. 24 and 25, homosexuality was illegal until September 2018, when the nation’s Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay rights activists. Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have a close relationship, even holding a joint rally in Texas featuring both world leaders.

Trump announced the effort in June, which is pride month, tweeting, “As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made to our great Nation, let us also stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison, or even execute individuals on the basis of their sexual orientation.” The examiner report said, quoting Trump that, “My administration has launched a global campaign to decriminalize homosexuality and invite all nations to join us in this effort!”
