Despite their best efforts to combat the spread of the coronavirus, some of the most well-known celebrities have confirmed that they’ve tested positive. Some are sharing their battle and their time in quarantine, while others are sending positive reinforcements to the fans, encouraging them to be safe.
Among celebrities who tested positive is British actress Indira Varma of “Game of Thrones” fame. Varma, 46, who played the role of Ellaria Sand in the epic HBO series, took to Instagram to share the news.”I’m in bed with it and it’s not nice,” she wrote. She advised her fans to “stay safe and healthy and be kind to your fellow people.” Her diagnosis came two days after fellow “Game of Thrones “actor Kristofer Hivju also said that he tested positive for COVID-19. Varma was also starring in the modern take of Anton Chekhov’s play “The Seagull” in London’s West End, alongside “Game of Thrones” alum Emilia Clarke. The play is on hold due to the pandemic.
Varma joins celebrities like actors Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson, Colton Underwood, and Idris Elba as well as NBA players Rudy Gobert, Donovan Mitchell, and Christian Wood and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The virus has not just altered the way people are leading their day-to-day lives, it has stopped the world from running, affecting most industries, including Hollywood. With live shows and concerts cancelled, shootings postponed, and film releases indefinitely postponed, the film fraternity is using this time to stay indoors and catch up with work and spend time with family.
Mindy Kaling is doing the same, but work is on top of her agenda. In a recent Instagram post, Kaling is seen in her pajamas as she is working on her laptop. “When all of your meetings for the day are video conference calls,” she wrote. Kaling perfectly embodied everyone who was told by their employers to work from home to avoid spreading the virus.
As celebrities offer a glimpse of their lives during the coronavirus pandemic, and share tips, and motivate and encourage their fans to follow social distancing and good hygiene, chefs like Padma Lakshmi are focusing on another essential — food. Sharing what she things are good essentials during these times of lockdowns and quarantines, Lakshmi told The Washington Post that she advises picking a Saturday or a Sunday and cooking ahead, while involving the entire family. The menu could range from a soup, to a chili or a stew. She also advises to stock up on frozen vegetables, and a lot of root vegetables, like turnips and parsnips.
Meanwhile, in Bollywood, playback singer Kanika Kapoor, became the first celebrity to test positive of COVID-19. However, according to reports in the Indian media, Kapoor has been drawing flak for refusing orders to self-quarantine and attended three social events following her arrival in Lucknow on March 11. And while she has been at the receiving end of ample censure, legal action too has been taken against her.
At the same time, big names in the Indian film industry are doing their part in creating awareness about the coronavirus pandemic. B-Town’s biggest names including Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt and Anil Kapoor joined hands for an awareness video. The actors filmed a nearly two-minute long video as a part of an initiative led by Rohit Shetty Picturez and issued in the public interest by the Government of Maharashtra. In the clip, the actors are seen promoting a healthier and safer mode of behavior aligned with the instructions of the government. Celebrities are also exploring their creative side. Actor Ayushmann Khurrana and comedian and actor Vir Das have penned poems on the pandemic.
Das also joined actors Richa Chadha, Gauahar Khan and Jay Bhanushali in criticizing people who thronged the streets and broke the March 22 the ‘Janta Curfew’ in India. A highlight of the March 22 India-wide lockdown was the collective beating of metal plates and clapping of hands to honor all those in the medical profession who are working round the clock to fight the pandemic. Big B shared a video of the family including Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Aaradhya Bachchan, Shweta Nanda and Navya Naveli Nanda who were gathered on their terrace to take part in the movement, beating of metal plates and clapping. “NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS ! PROUD TO BE AN INDIAN - JAI HIND,” he captioned the post shared on Twitter. Rai Bachchan also shared an adorable picture from the moment, featuring herself with daughter Aaradhya, husband Abhishek, and father-in-law at the back. “God Bless,” she wrote in caption.
Although Kapoor is the only Bollywood celebrity to have contracted the virus so far, several top actresses have been following a strict quarantine, putting health before all, and are staying indoors to maintain self isolation and social distancing to fight with the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. With film openings postponed and film shoots coming to a halt, they are making the most of their time staying home. Several are taking to social media to journal their time in isolation, and stressing the importance of social distancing, and proper hygiene.
Priyanka Chopra, a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, is in self isolation at her Los Angeles home, with her husband Nick Jonas and is continuously posting precautionary measures and videos, to spread awareness about COVID-19 to her fans. “This is such an insane time and all of our lives have been completely turned upside down,” the 37-year-old actress said to her fans in a Instagram Live session. “It feels like something out of a movie, but it’s not and we know that,” she said. However, the actress is also spending some quality time indoors with her husband Jonas and her pet, Gino, which was gifted to her by her husband, on their first wedding anniversary. The actor shared a few happy pictures with the German Shepherd, in which she can be seen showering all her love on Gino. She posted the picture with a caption, “Staying home during this time is the safest thing to do. Gino giving mommy hugs makes it so much better.”
Similarly, in Mumbai, Deepika Padukone has kick-started a series of photos on her social media, that go by the caption, ‘Productivity in time of COVID 19’. Through those posts, Padukone was seen cleaning her wardrobe, indulging in some self-care and enjoying a healthy diet including fruits and juices. Meanwhile, the actress has now shared a post concerning the environment too. The “Chhapaak” actress, in a bid to promote safe hygiene and stress the importance of washing hands during the coronavirus pandemic, joined other big names around the world to participate in the World Health Organizations’ Safe Hands. Padukone shared a video on Twitter where she is seen wearing a mask and exhibiting the right way to wash hands. Joining Padukone was actress Anushka Sharma who took up the challenge. She looked effortlessly chic in casual attire from her own clothing line Nush while explaining the importance of washing hands in her Instagram story.
Some like Kareena Kapoor Khan are using their time in self isolation to keep up with their social media handles. Kapoor Khan, who recently joined Instagram and already has 2 million followers, is certainly on an Instagram spree. In a recent Instagram post, the “Lal Singh Chaddha” actress showed her fans how she is killing time at home. She posted a picture of herself while her husband, Saif Ali Khan, was seen busy reading a book. She wrote, “Looks like he is ‘booked’ for the week… While 1 Instagram,” she wrote. She posted a throwback picture of herself as a child and captioned, “Me… when someone tries to shake my hand these days! #StayHome #StaySafe #SocialDistancing.”
Katrina Kaif is also in self isolation and is using her time at home to explore her passions and interests. In a video she recently posted, she is seen strumming a guitar. A fitness enthusiast, Kaif also shared a photo of her exercising with her gym instructor Yasmin Karachiwala on the terrace.
While most chose to stay put at their homes, actress Radhika Apte, who shuttles between India and London all year long, flew into the British capital amid the coronavirus outbreak not too long ago. Upon landing in London, she responded to messages of concern from her well-wishers in an Instagram post. The “Sacred Games” actress additionally shared her expertise of going by means of immigration at London’s Heathrow Airport. “For all the many messages I received from friends and colleagues with concern and curiosity — I’m back in London safely. There was no issue at immigration. It was rather empty and had a wonderful chat with them! The Heathrow express was literally empty and barely anyone at Paddington either. That’s all for now!
