Naren Weiss to debut as lead in ‘Kid Happy’

Naren Weiss, best known for his portrayal of antagonist Osama Bin Laden in Kamal Haasan’s “Vishwaroopam,” will make his debut as a lead in the feature film “Kid Happy,” to be directed by Kris Cheppaikode and Meghan Scibona.

The film is a story of resilience and hope in the face of soul crushing hardship. It revolves around a foster kid, standing at the crossroads of race, class and gender as he attempts to escape his hard scrabble life and journey to India, to meet his long-lost revolutionary-turned-guru father. Kannada film industry starlet Krishnaa is set to play the female lead, as first reported by Times of India.

Speaking about the casting, writer and director Cheppaikode said, “Naren is every director’s dream: he’s magnetic to watch and a joy to work with.”

Born in the U.S. to an American father and an Indian mother, Weiss is an actor, TV personality, comedian and model. Although Weiss began his career in the theater, acting in over a dozen plays, he was spotted onstage by a local television icon, Paloma Rao, who asked him to audition for the TV channel she had recently joined.

He auditioned successfully and joined the international English television channel Channel Ufx as a television host.

He spent over a year hosting shows for the channel before finally parting ways in 2012. During this time, he continued to work in the theater while also being continuously singled out for his quality performances.

He was also seen in Sudhish Kamath’s iconic independent film “Good Night | Good Morning.”

In 2013, Weiss returned to the U.S. to receive a graduate acting degree from Brooklyn College, and received his Master of Fine Arts in 2015.

Weiss has had a prolific playwriting career as well. Having started writing plays by accident, the profession took off and his work has since been seen at the prestigious Metroplus Theatre Festival across India. They have also been produced and performed in the United States, Singapore, South Africa and throughout India.

He is a finalist for the National Indie Excellence Award for his debut book, “God is Dead.”

He received his M.F.A. in Acting from Brooklyn College, and is a drama teacher at M.S. 391 and Brooklyn Acting Lab.

Weiss teaches BAL’s Improv Troupe, Storybook Theater, Scene Study, Play in a Day, and various summer programs.
