Netflix will not renew the political thriller “Designated Survivor” for the fourth season. The series, which stars Kal Penn, along with Sutherland, Natascha McElhone, Adan Canto, LaMonica Garrett, and others, was picked up by the streaming giant after ABC cancelled it after two seasons.
The conspiracy drama series centers on Tom Kirkman (Sutherland). After an attack on Capitol Hill wipes out the line of succession, this HUD secretary becomes president of the United States. Penn played communications director Seth Wright at the White House.
Although news reports say that low viewership is the main reason for the show’s cancellation, Sutherland, in previous interviews has said that viewing figures weren’t the main problem. “I don’t think season 4 will happen,” news reports quoted him as saying. “We had a great experience with Netflix and a sort of freedom which was fantastic, but the reality is that because the contracts were very complicated and different from network TV to Netflix, they didn’t book many performers in a series, they did other jobs. I don’t blame them for that.”
Announcing the cancellation, Netflix, in a statement said: We are proud to have offered fans a third season of Designated Survivor, and will continue to carry all three seasons for years to come. We’re especially thankful to star and executive producer Kiefer Sutherland, who brought passion, dedication and an unforgettable performance as President Kirkman. We’re also grateful to showrunner/executive producer Neal Baer for his guiding vision and steady hand, creator/executive producer David Guggenheim and EPs Mark Gordon, Suzan Bymel, Simon Kinberg, Aditya Sood and Peter Noah along with the cast and crew who crafted a compelling and satisfying final season.”
Penn, meanwhile, will be seen in the new NBC fall series “Sunnyside,” where he will seen as former New York City Councilman Garrett Modi, who squandered his fortunes in a drunken YouTube video that shows him staggering across the BQE, vomiting on a cop car and attempting to bribe a police officer.
