Michael Caine says wife Shakira saved his life

Sir Michael Caine and Shakira Caine attend an after party for "My Generation" at during the 61st BFI London Film Festival on Oct. 8, 2017 in London, England.

Actor Michael Caine says it was his wife Shakira Caine who helped him turn his life around in his 40s. In his autobiography”Blowing the Bloody Doors Off: And Other Lessons in Life,” he credits his wife for saving his life. Cain confesses that in his 40s, he found himself at a low point in his life and began heavily drinking.

“I was never bombed on set, but I thought that a small vodka for breakfast was nothing to worry about, and in the early 1970s I was drinking two bottles of the stuff a day,” the two-time Oscar winner writes.

“By an immense stroke of good fortune, Shakira arrived in my life just in time. The empty feeling vanished and she got on my case. Then, to top it all, she got pregnant and I was given a second go at fatherhood, and soon I got myself straightened out. I gave up alcohol entirely for a year and now I never drink during the day, and with dinner it’s just wine,” he writes.

The veteran actor also confessed to taking his wife on film shoots, so he is not tempted to have affairs with other actresses. “For a start, the obvious thing on location is you’re going on location, you’re married, with a load of beautiful actresses. You know what’s going to happen,” he told the Daily Mail. They two have been married for 45 years.
