The Miss Universe contest to be held in Atlanta next month will include Shirin Akter Shela, the first person from a Muslim-majority country in South Asia, to compete for the title.
The third-year physics student at Dhaka University was crowned Miss Bangladesh last month. At the contest, Shela wowed judges with her poise and brains and was finally crowned by Bollywood legend Sushmita Sen, who won both Miss World and Miss Universe in 1994.
The beauty from Thakurgaon has been making her country proud, having been declared the best female model in the Face of Bangladesh 2019 contest. Last year, she participated in Miss Bangladesh World and was among the top ten contestants.
This year, she also represented Bangladesh at Face of Asia 2019, which took place in Seoul, South Korea. So how will the soldier’s daughter fare when pitted against more than 80 candidates from all over the world? Only time will tell.
